A press release from the office of Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Dr. Surin Pitswan, Secretary General of ASEAN is visiting Dili today for a three days visit in Timor Leste from 1-3 March, 2012.
“The visit will mark an important step following Timor-Leste’s formal request to become a member of ASEAN, communicated to the former Chair of ASEAN in March and at the 19th ASEAN Summit held in Denpasar, Bali in November 2011.” cited the media release.

The Secretary General will meet with José Ramos-Horta, the President of the Republic,  Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, the Prime Minister and Zacarias Albano da Costa, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Timor-Leste.

He will also meet with key Ministers and Timorese academics and intellectuals. An official Dinner and Lunch have been scheduled on the occasion of this visit.

Marciano da Silva, Director General for Regional Integration of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that: “The purpose of the visit is for the Secretary General to gain firsthand information regarding the progress Timor-Leste is making in relation with its desire to join ASEAN.

The Secretary General and the delegation will arrive in Dili from Denpasar on Thursday the 1st of March. The Secretary General will return on Saturday, the 2nd of March and other members of the delegation will return on the 3rd of March, 2012. (*/CJITL)
